A few weeks ago, we watched #Alive, which was an awesome, South Korean film. Loved it. Koreans know how to do zombies. So we see a blurb for a movie, Alone. It sounds like the same premise as #Alive, but we decide to give it a go anyway. It in fact was the exact same movie, only with American actors. And not as good. It was like South Korea and America were given the same writing prompt, and told to put their own spin on it. #Alive was compelling. I cared about the characters. I cried for them. I cheered for them. I agonized with them. Joon-woo and Yoo-bin were survivors I could root for. Aiden and Eva, not so much. Eva was just... Shallow? She didn't have the depth that Yoo-bin had. If you haven't seen #Alive, I apologize now for this spoiler, but when she slides down the rope, from her balcony to the street below, and Joon-woo watches in amazement as she battles her way through a horde of zombies, like the bad-ass she was, and utters his astonishment, "Who is she? ", you know he isn't the hero rescuing the girl. She is her own hero. American version, I could forgive Aiden for thinking he has to rescue Eva, because that is how American movies always seem to go. I could have forgiven him. I can't forgive the filmmakers, who basically ripped off the premise of a great zombie story, and took a kickass female character, and turned her into a sobbing bimbo, who cries, begging her male rescuer not to die, because she can't survive without him. "If you aren't here, I will die. " The. Hell? They didn't even have Donald Sutherland's character, the neighbor trying to keep his zombie wife alive, try to feed her to his wife, as the neighbor in #Alive did, all apologetic to Joon-woo, but she is his wife and he loves her, and where again, we get to see how much of a warrior Yoo-bin is, as she successfully fights off the wife. No, Eva isn't even with Aiden, when Donald Sutherland knocks him out, tied him up, and then talks to him about how he lives his wife, and how he is compassionate and so here's some pills for you to take, so you won't feel any pain. Seriously? So to summarize, Alone is the zombie movie we didn't need. South Korean films rock.
